PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD)

Article by Angelika Ludwiczak, marine biologist and PADI guide at Cabo Trek

DSD – Discover Scuba Diving in Cabo is an experience for everyone that would like to try getting underwater for the first time and see what blowing bubbles is all about. And doing it in Cabo will take you to a magic underwater world of vibrant colors and extreme diversity of life. It will let you check how it is to breath underwater, see if this kind of activity is for you, and who knows, maybe it will lead to a n ew passion!

Our PADI DSD program is one of the most popular among vacationers in Los Cabos, and this is because you only need a couple of hours of your vacation to fulfill it! Yep, that’s right, you don’t need to be certified to get an underwater experience. The only eligibility requirements are being 10 years of age or older, being in a good health and feeling comfortable in the water. It is an amazing activity to do yourself, perfect gift for your better half, as well as a great family activity, that will bring you together!

Our PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience is divided into two parts – theoretical, and practical. You’ll start with learning all the necessary basics with one of our instructors. First of all you’ll get all the necessary equipment fitted and after adjusting it to you, we’ll teach you how to use it. You will learn hand signals, used for underwater communication, go through breathing and safety rules and practice main skills, that will have to be conducted underwater. Sounds scary? It sure might at this point, but it is easily achievable already for a 10 year old kid, so don’t worry!

The skills you will learn include:

-equalizing techniques to safely descend to the shallow, sandy bottom

-regulator and mask clearing techniques

-retrieving a lost regulator

It is very important for us, that you will know exactly what’s going to be happening when we start the dive, that’s why we’ll go through all the scenario before entering the water. And when we do, before going down, we will take our time to get used to the gear, have some test breaths and practice inflating and deflating BCD on the surface. We will also make sure to give you some tips on how to responsibly interact with aquatic life. This way you’ll feel more confident in the new environment!

We will go through exercises mentioned before on a confined, shallow water. It means you’ll be doing your skills on a depth of 8-10ft. And finally, when you complete your skills, we’ll have a real, open water dive – you’ll be able to go up to 40ft and enjoy some of the most beautiful underwater life. We will see some colorful schools of fish, corals, pretty sea stars and maybe even turtles and sea lions. You’ll also experience the amazing feeling of weightlessness, get some adrenaline rush and all of it under a watchful eye of our instructor. One thing is sure – you’ll never forget your first dive and it’ll give you lots of satisfaction!
